HISTORY & STORY OF DIGHA
The story about the origin of Digha is an integral part about knowing the place. The beach town was originally known as “Beerkul“. This particular name finds it’s mention in the letters of Warren Hastings as Brighton of the East.
We further find detail in the writings or John Frank Snaith an English Businessman, who was residing in the area of Beerkul which is modern day of Digha. The little push from John Frank to then chief minister of West Bengal did bring forth the beauties of Beerkul as modern day of the beach town.

Digha is no doubt one of the most popular vacation destinations not only in West Bengal, but also in south east India. The beaches here are the first go to place for the newly married couple going on their honeymoon.
The future too looks optimistic for Digha as the local Digha Sankarpur Development Authority is venturing in tune with the Chief Minister to turn Digha to second Goa. The State Government is planning to start Toy train service from Udaypur beach Digha to Udaypur, near the Bengal- Odisha border to Old Digha.
Did you know ? There are many Cashew nut farm in Digha! Though buying Cashew nuts won’t be a good choice as the price is same as in Kolkata also there is less guarantee about the authenticity when you purchase sealed packets them from local market.

A good, comfortable & affordable hotel, resort or stay is must for a memorable holiday and to enjoy the visiting place.
CAUTION! I recommend to book in advance your best hotel before arriving Digha and avoid getting trap from the agents you will find in railway or bus stand!
PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS WHILE VISITING DIGHA
- Electric torches or emergency lamps can help in case of temporary power outages, which are frequent during the summer.
- Mosquito repellent — this is a must for visitors and guests because Digha being a beach town. Most shops in Digha sell repellent. Buy oe keep one
- Please do not litter the environment with plastics. The beaches are clean and so we all should respect the mother nature
- Safety at Sea. The sea becomes very rough during high tide, especially during the new and full moon. It is unsafe to swim during high tide.Do not cross the sea wall during high tide or in Monsoon season
HOW TO REACH DIGHA:
Digha town is quite well connected by transport services starting from road, rail and air. The mode of transportation gives you flexibility to choose to reach Digha town by road or by train.
BY TRAIN
The trains are available from Santragachi as well as Howrah. The train stops at junctions like Kharagpur, Mecheda and Kanthi before arriving at Digha. The average travel time is 3 hours.
Recommended: For cheap and comfortable journey
BY BUS
Esplanade have bus services both private and public transportation for the destination. You can check for the service from the nearest bus stand. It is recommended to cross verify the bus timing from Red Bus, Yatra or goibibo.com. Price will be approximately Rs.330 per head. Hire self drive car or take your car to Digha, either way it would be great road trip.
Recommended: the roads to coastal town are quite splendid and scenic. Average Travel time – 5 hours
LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
There are other local transports available to reach digha ranging from Un-metered Taxis, Rental cars, Auto-rickshaws, rickshaws and E-rickshaws comprise the local means of transportation.
BY FLIGHT
The nearest airport is Netaji Subhahs Chandra Airport in Kolkata, From airport, you can hire private taxi or board a private deluxe bus.
Recommended: Take the air mode only if you are coming from other state to Digha.
