A structure rising from a rocky hill that stands 120 meter above Jodhpur's skyline, Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most magnificent forts in India. You can virtually explore and know about the history & present status of the fort by reading our detailed guide on Mehrangarh Fort.
WHAT IS MEHRANGARH FORT ALL ABOUT?
A rocky mountain in Jodhpur is covered by Mehrangarh Fort that rises 400 feet above the plain area of the city. Inside the fort, you will find a museum preserving several priceless objects and few beautiful palaces with florid architectural style.
STEEPED IN HISTORY
In the end of 12th century, the Rajput rulers were defeated by the invaders from Afghanistan resulted in the migration of the early Rajput clans and had to settle in Marwar, Rajasthan. Rao Jodha, who ruled after two generations, began to build a fort named ‘Mehrangarh’ meaning ‘fort of the sun’.
WHY MEHRANGRAH FORT?
MEHRANGARH FORT: PRESTIGE & POWER
Mehrangarh Fort symbolizes prestige and great power. The current head, Maharaja Gaj Singh II has preserved the premises and designed a museum. His ancestors controlled the state of Marwar since centuries and built this elephantine treasure so it is his responsibility to maintain their legacy.
BEWITHCED BY THE ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY
The fort was built over the period of 500 years & hence the designs and palaces represent the art of those centuries. The Mehrangarh Fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 and has been strengthened several times to make it strong. As the new rulers came from time to time, the fort underwent a renovation and alteration, elimination of some damaged parts and addition as well.
A series of seven gates fits the fort nicely and each has a different story. The most famous gates include Jai Pol (Gate of Victory), Fateh Pol, Dedh Kamgra Pol and Loha Pol.
The fort is also enriched by several decorated and brilliantly crafted palaces include Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Sheesha Mahal (Mirror Palace), Daulat Khana and Sileh Khana.
Chokelao Bagh is a restored and gorgeously planted 18th-century Rajput garden. You could well spend an afternoon at Chokelao Bagh under shady trees reading a book.
The museum contains elephant’s howdahs, palanquins, armoury, paintings and the turban gallery. The Great Palanquin – Mahadol is an exquisite piece of art and of great historic significance. Maharaja Abhay Singh brought this magnificent palanquin to Jodhpur as war booty after defeating the governor of Gujarat Sarbuland Khan in 1730.
The Mahadol is executed in the rich Gujarat tradition of carved and painted woodwork. The eves of the canopy are of beaten, cast and cut ironwork. The glass panes in wooden casements decorate the walls of the palanquin.
