Wayanad Travelogue & Trip Experience

My visit to Kerala for the first time dated back in 2000. Spellbound by its lush green atmosphere that I decided to be back to experience the lofty mountain ranges, the lush greenery of the state, the pure aroma of coffee and tea from estates. The freshness of misty mornings is still clear in my mind.

As the fate would have it, I took the voluntary transfer to silicon valley of India a.k.A Bangalore.I planned an offbeat trip along with my wife and friends. Wayanad in Kerala came up to my mind as the first choice.Visiting during the terminating phase of Monsoon would another charm for the upcoming road trip to Wayanad from Bangalore.

Reader’s Note!- Update- We went to Wayanad recently (22nd September-2017) and stayed in awesome hilltop resort called Wild Wayanad. The road condition is good and reserve 7  hrs to reach there (including pit stop for breakfast & lunch)

Wayanad- the green and clean town of Kerala

Green Wayanad

Green Wayanad

Wayanad is a green, laid back district in north-east Kerala and its glory lies in the unique topography of the vast Western Ghats. Wayanad district shares its borders with neighboring southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Wayanad enclosed with dense virgin forests and plantations of tea, coffee, clove, pepper, etc. Wayanad is sparsely populated and these all factors makes a perfect offbeat and also a hotspot for romantic holidays (Wikipedia).

We left Bangalore in the early morning to avoid trapped in the rush. We took a small breakfast stop at Mysore road food outlet. It takes approx. 6 hrs to reach Wayanad, and so we enter Kerala border around 12 PM.

Wayanad welcome us with rains as we entered the town and checked in our pre-booked homestay. The major tourist attractions in Wayanad include mainly for nature lovers and for those who wants to experience life in a very own way.

Major Tourist Attractions in Wayanad

Lakkidi Wayanad Valley Road

Lakkidi Wayanad Valley Road

The attractions include Lakkidi, which receives heavy rainfall in the south India, Chembra Peak, Edakkal Caves, Vythiri for its tree house accommodations, Meenmutthy waterfall, etc. Chembra peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, and it is approx 7K feet above sea level. For trekking, one needs to take permission from the local forest office of Meppady (a small village in Wayanad); the office issues a pass along with a guide.

It is highly recommended to take the help of guide when going for the trek. After having good lunch comprises of local cuisine, we decided to go for Lakkidi valley view. The approach to the valley itself was impressive with green landscape all over. The road becomes narrow as one passes through the curvy valley, we recommend parking your vehicle at one of the right spots and enjoy the view walking around the valley.

On returning from Lakkidi, we stop by a tea stall to taste the fine aroma of local tea from the estate. The next morning, we planned for local forest and temple trip. After breakfast, we were on the road; you won’t see a trace of the population for long. Wayanad is perfect for the souls who like to enjoy the company with fewer crowds.

A must visit site in Wayanad is “The Banasura Sagar Dam” is at 1400 meters from its entry gate and one can either walk the distance or take the vehicle (chargeable) from the local authority. You can do boating or simply laze around in the garden surrounding the dam.

The following evening we spent gossiping in the courtyard of our home-stay. We do realize that Wayanad is a place perfect for single, couple or family who is looking for a quaint corner to sleep in the lap of nature and to wake up to the chirping of birds feeling rejuvenated.
